Every woman dreams of a wardrobe that consists of designer sarees in India. Sarees that she can look flawless in and make her stand out.  Saree has seen a renewed interest in Indian fashion in recent years. Many of our favourite designers like Arpita Mehta, Masaba Gupta, etc have experimented with draped sarees and dhoti sarees. Be it a big fat Indian wedding, or fancy party, a fun get-together with family or a casual pooja at a friend’s place, a stunning designer saree is an Indian woman’s go-to!

With weddings and the festive season around the corner, I got a query about the designer sarees in India that are also available online. So I thought of writing a complete article about it.

 

So here is a list of 11 best designer sarees in India.

 

1) Jayanti Reddy.

About the designer: Fashion designer Jayanti Reddy is a Hyderabad-based designer who launched her label in 2012. Her label portrays old world charm and understated elegance by combining handwoven textiles with intricate hand embroidery. Her debut line of Indian ethics at the Lakme Fashion Week with the collection “Siaa” was a big hit worldwide.

Saree details: This purple saree by Jayanti Reddy is crafted in silk and is embellished by scalloped borders with embroidery detailing.

Occasion: Evenings party, weddings sangeet, etc. (evening look)

2) Arpita Mehta.

About the designer: Arpita Mehta debuted at the Lakme India Fashion Week Winter ’13, with her first collection, ‘Violet Garden’ that featured unique digital prints with mirror work detailing. Her minimalistic yet fashionable style is a  blend of ethnic and contemporary designs that enhance the feminine silhouette.

Her outfits have been worn by many Bollywood actresses and other famous personalities such as Alia Bhatt, Deepika Padukone, Sonam Kapoor, Jacqueline Fernandez, Shraddha Kapoor, Madhuri Dixit Nene, Juhi Chawla, Parineeti Chopra, to name a few.

About the designer: Papa Don’t Preach was launched in 2010 by Shubhika. The label was launched in the year 2010 for the girls and women who like to stand out, who are fun, bold and fearless. Her designs consistently display uber-chic style in vibrant designs and head-turning colours such as Indigo, green, pink, yellow, red, blue, orange, white with heavy embellishments.

About the designer:  Masaba Gupta at the age of 19 made her debut at Lakme Fashion week in the year 2009 as Gen-Next designer with the collection called ‘Kattran. She is the youngest person to have ever displayed their collections at LFW.  The designs under House of Masaba are versatile, lightweight, fuss-free and easy going. Women aged between 18-30 years is their main target audience. The label has worked very hard to make the conventional saree more consumer-friendly.  

Saree details: Following is a fuschia pink saree in a flat silk base with tropical banana print from Masaba. It comes with a green rabbit print blouse piece.

5) Varun Bhal.

About the designer: Varun Bahl launched his label in 2001. Nazionale della Moda Italiana to showcase his Spring summer ’07 and Autumn-Winter ’07-’08 collections at Milan Fashion Week, making him one of the first Indian designer ever to participate on the calendar. He is known for the simple silhouette without overloading them with heavy embellishments. His clothes range from traditional saris and lehenga ensembles to contemporary things like trousers, tunics, jackets, and dresses.

About the designer: Ritu Kumar is the largest and one of the most respected designer-wear brand in India. It was started in the year 1969 with just four hand block printers and two tables in a small village near Calcutta. Today the brand has grown to above ninety retail stores across the country. She was given the Padma Shri award by the Government of India in the year 2013.

Ritu Kumar as a brand has been admired and worn all over the world. Her outfits have been worn by not just Indian celebrities but international celebrities such as the late Princess Diana, Mischa Barton, Anoushka Shankar have been spotted wearing her designs.

About the designer: ASAI by Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla is amongst the oldest couture label in the country. The designer duo has been at the forefront of Indian fashion for the past 30 years. Established in 1986, they are famous for their formal, bridal and occasion wear. The two have also won the National Award for Costume Design for their work on the film Devdas.

Actress Sonam Kapoor wore an Abu Jani Sandeep Khosla lehenga for her wedding to Anand Ahuja in early 2018. They have also dressed international stars including Beyonce and Judy Dench.  Their label ASAL by Abu Sandeep has stores in Mumbai and Delhi and is also available online.
